DESCRIPTION

The Harpoon is a collaboration between Kizer Cutlery and James Buckley of Maverick Customs. This compact fixed blade knife is perfect for everyday carry (EDC) or as a general outdoor utility knife. It features a 3.86" D2 carbon steel blade with a black powder coat. D2 steel is a very popular steel used on knives that can hold a great edge and is easy to sharpen. The harpoon-style blade has a swedge near the tip and a dip on the spine to allow you to rest your thumb or index finger for more intricate, detailed work. The tapered Micarta handle has a finger choil allowing the user to choke up on the knife. The Kydex sheath has two button snaps giving the user ability to strap on his belt or gear.

Knife Good...Sheath bad...

The knife is pretty good - decently sharp on arrival, but that never holds. Been working the edge for quite some time and finally felt OK with it enough to carry. On the third time carrying it, the screw/snaps/wrap on the sheath basically did a disintegration - and went bye-bye - no idea why. I have contacted the company and been told a replacement is coming - but it will be a month. If that holds true, it will be a four-star rating - otherwise...2 at most. So, preliminarily a three star with hopeful thinking?

The sheath

I love the blade. It is small and compact which is great. The sheath sucks. It doesn’t fit the knife and it uses two hands to get it out. I can’t carry it because you can’t get the knife out with one hand. Plus I can’t even use the sheath to have it with my left hand. The sheath is to poorly made for it. I tried using my thumb I tried holding the sheath with my hand with pushing the it to get it out but the knife is stuck. I can’t get it out. It no longer comes out of the sheath so unless there is something I am doing wrong that it where it will stay.

Hard worker

I grabbed one of these on sale from one of the online retailers. It just arrived today and went straight to work with me.

The edge was well refined and the blade is thin and tall enough with the flat grind to make this a competent slicer. I should get many multiple sharpenings out of it before it gets too thick behind the edge.

The ergonomics seem perfect for my hand and the micarta is quite well done. Good in all grips. It is ever so slightly balanced toward the handle though on a knife this size, this does not seem to present a problem.

My only issue with D2 is the greater chance of corrosion over a true stainless but the coating should mitigate this to some degree. D2 has very good edge retention, especially at this price range.

The sheath on mine fits very well with solid retention and I really appreciate the thumb push-off.

Overall, it's an attractive, comfortable, EDC fixed blade that I will feel confident in pushing into harder cutting tasks. I am very happy with this purchase. Well done, Kizer.

(This review proceeds a sharpening so I don't yet have a feel for how well it's heat treated and this is my first D2 from Kizer. Time will tell.)
